Trending towards JavaOne

The Janitor isn't one to fall prey to the latest trends, but there's one trend that this week will follow: there won't be much news this week about Java SE, Java ME, JavaFX or JavaCard before the start of JavaOne next week. But if you go by what people are searching for, its easy to see the cyclical nature of the interest in the JavaOne show, where many of the companies involved in Java save up their technology announcements.   dannycoward

Will the Java Platform Create The World's Largest App Store?

To say the past few months have been a whirlwind is an understatement.

And thanks for the reminders, I recognize it's been a while since I've posted a blog. For reasons why, just click here to read the background. And before you ask, SEC regulations and securities laws limit what I can discuss about the Oracle transaction, so don't expect any insights on the topic.

How do you ensure that your Java ME game will sell really well? Breaking To Make Things Better
Our stance on API backwards compatibility has always been to try as hard as possible but no more than that. We are now in the process of fixing a mistake in Styles in regards to the fgSelection/bgSelection properties.

In the last three updates to this blog, I've tried to set out a clear direction of where Sun's headed. I've talked about our three basic priorities:

I'm hoping you've got a clear picture surrounding the first of these two priorities - how and where we drive software adoption, and focus our commercial efforts.

So now I'd like to talk about the linkages - while also addressing one of our biggest strategic challenges, our scale. --Jonathan Schwartz

Technology Adoption (2 of 4)
As I referenced in my prior entry, I'm reviewing Sun's three major strategic imperatives, and our progress going in to next fiscal year. Our strategic imperatives, in order, are:

1. Technology Adoption
2. Commercial Innovation
3. Efficiently Connecting 1. and 2.

This entry focuses on the first, Technology Adoption. Adoption is a non-economic phenomena, no money is spent, only time - yet it has extreme financial consequences. Let me give you an example. -- Jonathan Schwarz

Getting ready for the Java Libre FOSDEM dev room

This time around, the FOSDEM conference is coming around the corner a bit faster then last year. FOSDEM takes place every year at the ULB in Brussels, Belgium, approximately two months after the Devoxx conference in Antwerp. It's packed, it's intense, and it's a great way to meet new people across open source project and language boundaries.

This year's schedule for the development room has been split into a few blocks of related talks. We've tried the '30 minutes or less per talk' approach last year, and it worked pretty well, allowing a lot of developers to present the work they are passionate about. And of course, to enable matching real life faces to IRC handles and e-mail addresses, which makes it so much easier to continue interesting follow up conversations into the night. 2009 promises to be an exciting year for Java: The Planetarium expects Java SE 7 to be mostly completed, with modularization, multiple languages being a big deal, JavaFX will ship the mobile profile, and preview (and possibly complete) version 2 including the TV edition, Java ME should finish or get close to finishing its next mobile edition, and we should continue to see lots of mobile frameworks and app stores. Others are looking into their crystal balls too ...   dannycoward

Java, JavaFX: Staying on top of it all

There's really isn't a better way to stay on top of what's going on with Java, multiple languages, new APIs, JVM developments, the new JavaFX programming model and so on than to hear and talk about it first hand at a conference.

Like Devoxx which is just around the corner (especially if you are in Belgium). For those of you who can't go, your humble Planetarium Janitor will put down the broom that week to keep you posted about the news and gossip in the hallways via a mix of tweets, microblogs and daily digests. And from the virtual world too.

And you are welcome to sign up for the M3DD conference in the Bay Area in January, which promises to be a stimulating mix of in depth and lightening talks with an informal, mobile feel.

Perhaps en route to the Mobile World Congress in February, for something on grander if less personal scale. And of course to see all the latest in mobile gadgetry.

And don't forget, if you feel inspired, to submit a talk for JavaOne 2009 before December 19th, which has moved to June this year, and has simplified the tracks down to just four.

NetBeans 6.5 for Java SE, Java ME and JavaFX

NetBeans 6.5 is out ! What's new for you ?

Java SE developers get new goodies like incremental compilation so your app is always ready to run, the Analyse Javadoc feature to bring your javadoc in line and improved debugging support with an updated UI and deadlock detection.

Or why stick to Java ? You could try JavaScript, which is fully supported right from navigating its different dialects while editing the code to debugging it in FireFox and IE. Or write Ruby, with better support for Rake files and break and catchpoints in the Ruby debugger. Or taking a walk on the wild side by coding up a RIA using Griffon, with the full editing support for Groovy code.

For Java ME developers, out of the box you get more SVG and data-binding components you can use in the Visual Designer Palette, or add your own. Or the LWUIT ones.

The support for JavaFX in NetBeans will get a big update with the JavaFX SDK 1.0 release,  so don't delete your copy of NetBeans 6.1 with JavaFX support just yet !

Could be time to upgrade. Its getting some good press.

Happily for Java developers, you are well supported. With the SIP API for Java ME, now part of the MSA platform, supported in the WTK, and in NetBeans for developing a SIP client.

And those of you who wish to extend or customize the basic functionality of the SIP server which brings lone users seeking a group session of some kind together, just yesterday Sailfin reached another milestone. Google phone needs work

The AW sent me a pointer to this article from the San Jose Mercury News published on 16Oct2008 that gave a fair assessment of the upcoming Google phone.

See:

Google phone needs work

Here's a quote:

 Unfortunately, video and song playback
is hampered by a major hardware
shortcoming: the G1 eschews a standard
headphone jack in favor of an included
 but uncomfortable earbud headset, which
plugs into the mini USB port that is
also used to charge the phone. This
 poses several problems...
Better wait for 2.0. Or get a BlackBerry Storm. It has Java ME technology and is already mature. Nothing wrong with that!

Hmm... what does this phone remind me of: i35 Java technology-enabled phone?

The engine in JavaFX Desktop

Like figuring out that a great car needs a great engine, its no surprise that many of the press and blogs about the Java SE 6u10 release have worked out that a great RIA technology needs a great runtime: that the upcoming JavaFX 1.0 release will get a big turbo-charge on the desktop from the new 6u10 features like a quicker download, startup, draggable applets and accelerated graphics from the underlying JRE. ...   dannycoward

LWUIT Makeover: SVG/MIDP & LWUIT

The LWUIT Makeover demo is an excellent tool for comparing the different approaches for building MIDP UI. While LWUIT's differences to MIDP are more clear to most, some people still have questions regarding LWUIT as opposed to SVG. When compared to LCDUI the LWUIT interface is much richer and allows greater control, this will probably still be the case even in MIDP 3.0's timeframe since a lightweight UI by its very nature is more customizable than a heavyweight UI (as is the case in Swing vs. SWT/AWT) ...   Shai Almog (noreply@blogger.com)

Performance is one of the main points of focus when working on small devices, speed and memory size are remarkably important and often contradictory requirements. Touch Screen Support On The Samsung/Sprint Instinct Device

Chen and myself created a new video featuring some of the touch screen visual effects we demoed in the simulator here on the Instinct device.
No 3D transition effects are demoed since the device doesn't support JSR 184 (notice that LWUIT still runs unmodified on such a device!). Perst Lite, an open source, object-oriented embedded database for Java ME (J2ME)
Perst Lite, an open source, object-oriented embedded database for Java ME (J2ME), has been upgraded to version 3.0. Memory and storage footprint are major concerns for developers in Java ME. Perst Lite adds powerful on-the-fly compression in version 3.0 that reduces stored data’s size by three to five times, on average. Coupled with the database system’s already-small footprint, this compression adds another compelling reason for developers to choose Perst Lite for data management on smartphones, PDAs and other small-profile devices. Version 3.0 marks improvements in the Perst’s documentation. 11 Things About LWUIT
Our session went very well, those of you who have been to our session saw some of the work we did on LWUIT which is now up and available here: https://lwuit.dev.java.net/

LWUIT is designed for small devices and heavily inspired by Swings design, with many lessons learned. LWUIT is designed for WORA on small devices from the ground up, it works with a single JAR on all devices and incorporates the good ideas of Swing while bringing in lots of the great ideas of current day Java Desktop programming (e.g. SwingLabs).

Progress Indicator & Threads In LWUIT
LWUIT doesn't ship with a pre-existing progress indicator, mostly because making something generic enough for all the common cases is not as simple as it might seem in the beginning. Especially when considering how easy it is to write your own progress indicator...    Shai Almog

A cool thing about J1 is meeting people who are working on great ideas which I wasn't expecting, I met Max Mu before but we hadn't talked too much... Then in J1 he flashed his PSP running a port of Phone ME which was also the subject of his BoF, getting LWUIT running on it was just a matter of beaming the jar over into his device using BT. It just worked, very little needed doing.    Shai Almog

SigTest - new Tools project!
The SigTest™ project is based on Sun Microsystem's signature testing and API conformance tool of the same name. The SigTest™ tool makes it possible to easily compare the signatures of two different implementations of the same API. It verifies that all of the members are present, reports when new members are added, and checks the specified behavior of each API member. Originally developed to help in the creation of TCK test suites, it has since evolved into a general purpose tool that can be used to compare any two implementations of an API to determine their differences. The SigTest™ project is being created in order to develop a community that will improve it, further its development, and use it to develop test suites. We encourage you to browse, download, contribute, and get involved.

Announcement to the cqME and JT Harness Communities: Intent to add the classpath exception to GPL2 licenses.
In response to requests from their communities, the cqME projects (ME Framework and the cq3G test suite) and the JT harness project will add the classpath exception to their GPL2 licenses. The addition of the classpath exception allows a greater opportunity for community members to produce and distribute products based on the software in these projects. The classpath exception allows members to link the software in these projects to an independent application to produce an executable, regardless of the license terms of the independent application, and to copy and distribute the resulting executable under terms of the member's choice, provided that they also meet, for each linked independent application, the terms and conditions of the license of that application. The produced executable would not be subject to the GPL requirement that it be offered to the public under the GPL. For a general discussion about the GPL variations and their impact, see: http://www.sun.com/software/opensource/java/faq.jsp.
If you have any comments or concerns about these changes, please submit them to the project forums: cqME or JT Harness. The licensing changes will be rolled out on November 6, 2007.

Sun: Plenty of Life Left In Java ME
In a recent update to its Java roadmap, Sun Microsystems pretty much omitted any discussion about Java Micro Edition (ME), which would seem to be a bad sign for the embedded language. James Gosling today updated his blog to state rather unequivocally that Java ME is not going anywhere (something he probably should have said at the roadmap press event last week). Read more . . .
